Self Healing Aspalt on the A58

On this Blog we will give info on the test track with Self Healing Asphalt that is built on the A58 near Vlissingen in The Netherlands. The Asphalt is a special type of ZOAB (very porous aphalt concrete) containing small steelwool fibres. A known but serious problem with ZOAB is ravelling: stones at the surface coming off in time due to microcracking in the binder. The special ZOAB that is developed at Delft University (sponsored by AgentschapNL) can be heated with induction energy due to the fibres that are present which closes the microcracks and with that extends the service life of the road.

30 years

A Dutch newspaper that was invited by Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch government), wrote an article about the test-track. The conclusion is that our 'wonder-asphalt' can last for 30 years!!!!

CNN - interview and other TV-shows

In July 2014 Erik gave an interview for CNN.
you can see this online when you click on the CNN -logo

We had more TV shows in the last year which can be found by clicking on the links:

We also published a lot of articles on the project. You can find them under the literature-tab.

aggregates stay colder

What you see in a close-up image during the trial on the test-track with the induction machine is that the asphalt is heated. But especially the bitumen heats up and the aggregates do not. This is perfect and it works as we intended it to be. Only the bitumen is heated by the 'hot' fibres. The aggregates should stay cold in order cool the material down again. In that way the cars can use the road shortly after the treatment.

Test with induction machine!

In June 2014 we did a test with the prototype of the induction machine on the test-track on the A58 near Vlissingen. The result of this tests are very promising,
Below you see an image taken with an infrared camera during the test:

The blogger is back.......

It is some time ago since our last item on the blog. However a lot of things happened since the last item was post. We will give an update with a few items and will try to place more updates in the future.
